Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing unwanted presents could be viewed as a little discourteous – except if it's done for a noble purpose.
A Philanthropic Sale
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. The diverse haul is said to contain items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, together, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Italian art dealer. An exact timeline is yet to be set, although the aim is to hold the auction before Christmas, with all funds raised going to various charities.
Storage Room Treasures
The items are currently kept in a secure area on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been stored away over a long period.
A complete inventory remains made public, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was presented in parliament. The discussion centered on if a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents valued above €300.
An International Array of Presents
Notable gifts feature:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.

The forthcoming sale represents a novel approach to manage the protocol gifts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
