A senior Russian army officer has been declared dead following an explosion in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.

The attack occurred on Monday morning when an IED planted beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

Authorities mentioned that one possible explanation suggests the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has remained silent.

Location of the Incident

Officials have been sent to the location, which is reportedly in a south district of the metropolis.

Reports suggest the blast happened in a car park near a residential building.

Pattern of Incidents

Since the start of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been attacked within Moscow.

This new event echoes other notable incidents, for instance:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a explosive concealed on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a source from Ukraine earlier attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are never officially confirmed as a matter of policy.

The war has increasingly seen shadowy operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death continues to be underway.
