The Devastating Shift a Single Year Has Caused in the United States

Twelve months back, the environment was utterly different. Ahead of the national election, thoughtful citizens could recognize the nation's significant faults – its unfairness and disparity – yet they continued to perceive it as America. A democratic nation. A place where the rule of law carried weight. A state led by a respectable and upright leader, notwithstanding his advanced age and growing weakness.

Currently, as October 2025 ends, numerous citizens hardly identify the country we live in. Persons suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and shoved into vehicles, sometimes refused legal rights. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is undergoing demolition to build a lavish ballroom. The leader is persecuting his political rivals or supposed enemies and requesting legal authorities transfer a huge total of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are dispatched into American cities under fabricated reasons. The military command, rebranded the Department of War, has practically freed itself of routine media oversight as it spends potentially totaling close to a trillion USD of taxpayer money. Universities, legal practices, news companies are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and billionaires are handled as members of the royal family.

“The US, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has crossed the edge toward dictatorship and totalitarianism,” an American historian, commented in August. “Ultimately, more quickly than I believed likely, it occurred in this country.”

Each day begins amid recent atrocities. And it's hard to comprehend – and painful to realize – just how far gone we have become, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.

However, it is known that Trump was duly elected. Even after his profoundly alarming first term and following the warnings linked to the understanding of the conservative plan – following the president personally said publicly he intended to rule as a tyrant only on the first day – sufficient voters elected him over his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as the current reality may be, it's more daunting to recognize that we have only been several months into this presidential term. How will three more years of this downfall find us? And if that timeframe becomes something even longer, as there is no one to limit this leader from opting that another term is necessary, possibly for defense purposes?

Certainly, not everything is hopeless. There are midterm elections next year which might establish an alternate governmental control, should Democrats recapture the Senate or House of Congress. There are public servants who are striving to apply certain responsibility, like lawmakers that are launching an investigation concerning the try to money grab by federal prosecutors.

And a leadership election in 2028 could begin our journey to healing just as the previous vote put us on this unfortunate course.

We see millions of Americans protesting in urban areas across municipalities, like they performed recently at democracy demonstrations.

A former official, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of the US is rising”, similar to past after the Communist witch-hunt era during the fifties or amid the sixties activism or in the Watergate scandal.

On those occasions, the tilting vessel finally returned to balance.

Reich says he understands the signs of that awakening and observes it occurring currently. For proof, he cites the recent massive protests, the extensive, multi-faction opposition regarding a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal rejection by reporters to accept the defense department’s demands they solely cover approved content.

“The slumbering entity perpetually exists inactive until specific greed grows too toxic, a particular deed so offensive toward public welfare, some brutality so noisy, that he has no choice except to rise.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll turn out correct.

At the same time, the major inquiries persist: can America regain its footing? Can it retrieve its status in the world and its devotion to constitutional order?

Or should we recognize that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts suggests that the second option is true; that everything could be finished. My hopeful heart, nevertheless, convinces me that we need to strive, by any means we can.

Personally, as a media critic, that means encouraging reporters to adhere, more completely, to their purpose of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it may be participating in election efforts, or planning demonstrations, or finding ways to safeguard ballot privileges.

Less than a year ago, we were in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or in several years? The fact is, we are uncertain. All we can do is try to continue fighting.
