The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
