The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international comes at a time when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
